Do you ever feel like time is just getting away from you way too quickly?!? It’s crazy, right? It sounds cliche, because everyone says it, but it is SO true. My son is already 9, my daughter is already 2+ and I don’t have many years before I cross the bridge to the 40s. How did all of that HAPPEN?

I’ve been working hard on a lot of business planning lately, and it has forced me to really look inside myself and think about why I do what I do. What is my message? What makes me different? We have all heard the saying “a picture is worth a thousand words”. I think it is more than that. People tend to think about pictures as images printed on paper. Paper. Really? If you stop and think about it, a picture is so much more than a piece of paper. For example, I have a large print of my son that I took when he was three… I’ll post it here:

This photograph is very emotional for me! It brings me back to the moment I took it, and besides that, it evokes a whole flood of memories; sounds, smells, touch, etc, etc. I love it because I never have to forget. Images such as these are SO powerful for that reason. It’s like a visual bookmark that can transport me back into the pages of my own story. That’s why I love to decorate my home with family artwork. It’s personal. It’s real. It’s emotional.

So my story is this: I am different because I BELIEVE in what I do. And I want others to have the experience that I have every time I look at the images that I take of my kids. I believe in putting these amazing little creatures on your walls, on your desks, bookshelves, pianos, etc, so that you are tickled by the memories of times that have passed every single day. I want you to have artwork that you can touch, you can see on a daily basis. I DON’T want you to have a CD full of .jpgs that may or may not be obsolete someday. I DON’T want your images to lay in that coffin called a computer so that you can look at them every once in a blue moon. I want you to have the most amazing feeling when you look at your artwork. I want that for you because I BELIEVE in it.

My little girl is growing up so fast too… every day she says something new that just blows me away. She’s the funniest little thing. I love the images below, and I know that someday they will do what the image I posted of my son above does to me now. It’s precious people, take the time to stop and capture it… whether you do it yourself, or hire someone to do it, put your favorite images where you can see them every day!

2012 is the year of getting my clients to appreciate photographs of their loved ones as important and relevant artwork for their home.

You know that saying, “Remember the little things, because someday you’ll look back and realize that they were the big things”, or something like that? Well, each time I photograph a newborn, I am reminded of that saying. Amidst the sleepless nights and weird body changes that new moms go through, it’s sometimes hard to take time to appreciate the little toes and fingers, the yawns, the little gurgly noises and soft cries. The older my kids get, they are obviously so far removed from those little things, but with each stage they have their own little things too.

It’s so easy for us to want our kids to get to the next milestone, to correct them for saying something improperly, or help them perfect a skill, but sometimes I will stop myself and just appreciate the stage and the adorableness of it all. For example, when my daughter wants me to hold her, she says “Mommy, hold you”… it is so sweet and I never want to forget that. So, I make sure every time I hear her say it, I just soak it all in. A little thing.

I told the parents of this little one that one of the best parts of my job is getting a peek at stages that have long past for me with each little subject I photograph. It’s true. While every stage has its ups and downs, my little subjects often remind me of the little things that I’ve tried to hold in my brain, but inevitably get pushed to the back and need just a little spark to rejuvenate that memory.

Don’t forget to take time for the little things today.

I remember playing peek-a-boo behind the big silver metal bucket in my studio when this young lady was just 2 years old. Now, she is nearly 9. She was nice enough to bring me a piece of glass art that she made. It is beautiful. Her family raises honeybees too, and she brought me a jar of their honey. It’s always a treat to see her each year!

These girls come to see me every year. I always look forward to seeing their outfits – their mom has style! And, it is so much fun to come up with a new creation for their holiday card. We did this one on pearl paper. Isn’t it pretty? Don’t forget, even if you had a session earlier in the year, I can still do a holiday card design for you! The turnaround is pretty fast so call me or e-mail me today!
